The Second IPC (May 2006) was on the theme Violence against Girls in Africa. It was attended by many luminaries including President Joaqim Chissano of Mozambique, Mrs Chantal Compaore of Burkina Faso, Professor Paulo Pinheiro (Independent Expert for the UN Secretary- General’s Study on Violence against Children), and Professor Yakin Erturk (Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women). The Conference attracted some 600 participants from within and outside Africa. The studies that were prepared for this conference and the deliberations and conclusions of this Conference were major inputs to the Secretary-General’s World Report on Violence against Children. The conclusions and findings from the various inter-related activities were also presented to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child which in turn used them to plead for special attention to the subject especially in the AU and for the appointment of a special representative on violence against children.
