The Third IPC

The Third IPC was held on the important theme of Child Poverty in Africa from 12 to 13 May 2008  at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa. As in the past, this event also attracted some of the world’s best thinkers, academics, experts and child rights activists from Africa and beyond including: President Girma Wolde Giorgis of Ethiopia; Professor Yanghee Lee and Dr Agnes Aidoo, respectively Chair and Vice Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child; Mr. Jean Baptiste Zoungrana, Chair of the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child; Prof. Peter Townsend, Centennial Professor of International Social Policy of the London School of Economics; Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University; Dr. Marta Santos Pais, Director of UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre; Ms. Maria Magdalena Sepúlveda Carmona, The UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty; and senior executives and officials from International Child Support, Plan International,Save the Children Alliance, UNFPA, UNICEF, and other child rights organisations. The work carried out under this project resulted in a number of publications on child poverty in Africa. Selected papers prepared for this conference were included in a landmark publication Child Poverty: African and International Perspectives published by the well-known publishing house Intersentia.
